Treatments Offered

Pain treatments offered by Lanier Interventional Pain Center

Some of the more common procedures we offer are listed below. We place great emphasis on diagnosis and treatment selection. We know your time is valuable and we want to get you more comfortable as soon as possible!

Spine and joint injections of all types (guided by fluoroscopy [X-ray] or ultrasound)

We use X-ray technology to ensure accuracy and effectiveness of the various types of injections we administer. They are proven for relief of many types of pain. Injection types include epidural injection, sacro-iliac joint injection, facet joint injection and intra-articular (joint) injections of all types. The intent is to place medication in the pain-generating area to relieve chronic or acute discomfort.

Radiofrequency treatments

This type of treatment is administered directly on the nerve causing the discomfort. We apply heat in the form of electrical current preventing the nerve from carrying pain signals. Radiofrequency treatments typically provide pain relief for 6 months or longer.

Nerve blockade

Irritated nerves are common sources of pain in the trunk and extremities. We perform ultrasound and fluoroscopically-guided injections to reduce nerve inflammation on a wide variety of peripheral nerves.

Spinal Cord Stimulation and Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation

Spinal cord stimulation is a powerful pain relieving procedure where a small battery and electrodes are implanted into the body. This system acts directly on the nerves to relieve your pain, like a "pacemaker" for the spine. We offer two main forms of these "pacemakers" to address your specific pain pathology: the spinal cord stimulator (SCS) and dorsal root ganglion stimulator (DRG).

Vertiflex Procedure for Spinal Stenosis

We offer the Vertiflex procedure, a small interspinous implant, for some lumbar spinal stenosis conditions. This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure done in our surgery center.

Regenerative Injection Treatments ("prolotherapy")

Regenerative injection treatments consist of injecting natural substances in areas where tendons and ligaments are loose resulting in stimulation of tissue growth. This results in greater structural support for diseased joints. Clinical studies have shown this to be effective in many cases of chronic pain. The latest options for this include injecting your own stem cells or platelet-rich plasma.

Vertebroplasty / kyphoplasty

These treatments involve a rebuilding process to restore fractured vertebrae due to osteoporosis and/or injury due to a fall. Both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty involve use of bone cement to restore strength and height in the affected vertebrae.

Sacroiliac joint stabilization

Low back and leg pain is commonly derived from the sacroiliac (SI) joint. We offer a minimally invasive stabilization procedure of the SI joint for long term pain relief.

VIA disc

As we age, the discs in our spine lose their cushioning (ie nucleus pulposus) and begin to collapse. We offer restorative injections that can improve pain and rehydrate worn out discs.

Stellate ganglion block

Stellate ganglion blocks can treat a variety of conditions by resetting an imbalance of the nervous system. These conditions include complex regional pain syndrome (formerly known as RSD), hot flashes, long COVID, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Intracept procedure

Studies have shown that low back pain can originate from nerves that supply the discs and vertebrae of the spine. The Intracept procedure targets these nerves to provide long term pain relief.

Ketamine infusion

Ketamine is a powerful pain medication that can be administered as an infusion for pain relief when other therapies have failed. Conditions such as CRPS (formerly known as RSD), refractory depression, neuropathy, and fibromyalgia have shown long term benefit from ketamine infusions.

Peripheral nerve stimulation

Some pain conditions arise from unhealthy or irritated nerves. This can be related to injury, surgery, or systemic diseases such as diabetes. We offer minimally invasive nerve stimulators that can calm irritated nerves and provide long term pain relief. These devices are commonly used to treat headaches, knee pain, phantom leg pain, and shoulder pain.

Low dose naltrexone (LDN)

Low dose naltrexone is a pain management treatment that involves taking a low dose of the opioid antagonist naltrexone. It is believed that LDN works by reducing inflammation, which can help alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with conditions such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, long COVID, and Crohn's disease. LDN is typically taken orally, and may provide relief for individuals with chronic pain who have not responded to other treatments.

We use X-ray or ultrasound guidance for most of our procedures.

X-ray is an electromagnetic wave, similar to light, that the eye can't see. It allows us to look inside the body without invading it. Ultrasound, a kind of sound that's too high-pitched to be heard by human ears, provides a similar opportunity but a different type of viewing. These two methods allow Dr. John L. Givogre and Dr. Tyler W. Kabes of Lanier Interventional Pain Center to precisely locate points of discomfort and to deliver targeted therapy.
